Our company produces a product that generates high concentrations of hydrogen sulfide; the exact amount produced is unknown. During production, the exhaust gas absorption tower becomes very heavy. We use two-stage rotary plate absorption towers with 3.6% liquid alkali as the absorption medium, but the odor remains strong during production. We are looking for ways to absorb hydrogen sulfide more effectively and quickly. We do not intend to recover or reuse the hydrogen sulfide – would increasing the concentration of the liquid alkali or adding an additional absorption tower help? We would appreciate any advice you can offer. Also, are there anyone who has used sodium carbonate to absorb hydrogen sulfide? We would be happy to discuss this further. Thank you! Poor handling of hydrogen sulfide can be fatal! The concentration in our company is very low, and it is absorbed using a five-stage absorption tower. Sulfur is produced by reacting sulfur dioxide gas with hydrogen sulfide; it seems that air can also be used for this purpose.
I’m not aware of the H2S concentration and air flow rate in the owner’s facility; however, your company’s waste gas can be routed through purification equipment using KMnO4 filters to remove H2S. www.aafchina.com
The ideal absorbing solution is a mixture of sodium hydroxide and sodium carbonate.
Is 3.6% alkali solution a bit low? A 10% sodium hydroxide solution can be used. Refineries commonly use methyl diethanolamine solutions to absorb hydrogen sulfide, but they aim to recover sulfur; the methyl diethanolamine can be separated and recovered for reuse. Methyldiethanolamine has the best effect on absorbing hydrogen sulfide, but it is expensive. After absorbing hydrogen sulfide, a sodium hydroxide solution produces a mixture of sodium sulfide and sodium hydrosulfide. Dear friends, please recommend methods for treating this type of wastewater. After treatment, the sulfide content must be controlled at 1 milligram per liter (Grade 3 standard of the comprehensive wastewater discharge standards).

:) We have a flow-through wet desulfurization method (based on the principle of hypergravity) that can reduce hydrogen sulfide levels to 5-20PPM. In one previous case, the initial H2S concentration was 1500PPM; the washing solution used was 5% sodium hydroxide, and the flue gas temperature was no higher than 40°C. After treatment, the H2S concentration dropped to 5-20PPM.
