The urine tower originally used asbestos pads along with stainless steel toothed pads; however, due to the poor quality of those asbestos pads and their tendency to leak, I replaced them in 1989 with aluminum pads attached to the toothed pads. The result was excellent – over thirty years passed without any leaks caused by the top cover. In 1990, due to faulty instruments, the pressure in the urine tower rose to 32 MPa, yet there were still no leaks. The main bolts were tightened using a hammer.
Aluminum sheet, stainless steel sheet, or PTFE sheet can all be used as linings for toothed gaskets; most companies use hydraulic wrenches to tighten bolts.

Previously, I also tried using a 0.5-thick pure aluminum sheet along with a toothed gasket, but leaks still occurred. Later, I replaced the aluminum sheet with a 0.5-thick PTFE gasket; this proved to be very effective, with no leaks at all. The most important thing is to control the preload of the cover bolt; a simple way to do this is to measure the gap between the cover and the main body during preloading and try to keep it as small as possible.
I’ve learned that this device experienced several leaks at the beginning of 2014 due to the large cover of the high-pressure washer; in the end, composite graphite was still used.
