First, are you sure that the U-shaped structure is used solely for sewage disposal and not for any other purposes? If that’s the case, then the requirements for complete evacuation are quite stringent; only in this way can the lowest possible level be ensured. On a straight pipe, it’s impossible to determine which point has the lowest level, as there will inevitably be some residue remaining.
What system? Is it definitely to drain at the lowest point? !

I don’t think it’s necessary to use a U-tube for draining; there’s a valve where the fluid returns to the distillation tower, and by installing a tee there, the fluid can be drained. Moreover, that location can be identified as the lowest point
I’m not familiar with your system, but in my opinion, the use of a U-tube is generally related to creating a liquid seal, which serves to isolate air from the liquid. If that’s not the case, then a U-tube is usually not necessary
I believe the U-tube is a liquid seal tube that ensures a certain liquid level (or amount of liquid) in the condenser, thereby preventing gas from being carried back into the distillation column
