In simple terms, if the inventory in the stripping section cannot be maintained, there is a risk of pressure loss in the two vessels; in such cases, it is necessary to promptly increase the amount of steam used for stripping, activate all safety mechanisms including those based on main air supply, introduce emergency steam to various systems, and adjust the differential pressure between the two vessels. Further actions are then taken, and usually by this point the plant has already been shut down.

Generally speaking, the standpipe might not have been properly lined, leading to perforations or problems with the valves not sealing properly. If it suddenly breaks, it’s extremely dangerous – high-temperature smoke and air can enter the settler and mix with oil and gas, making an explosion inevitable.
