Hydrocracking units are a means of converting heavy oil into lighter fractions; they also help to improve a company’s profitability and the quality of its products. However, after operating for some time, corrosion or issues related to the raw material itself can lead to high levels of iron ions in the tail oil. This is a serious problem for hydrocracking units that use a full-cycle treatment process for tail oil, as it causes an increase in the pressure drop across the catalyst bed in the upstream reactor. I wonder if any experts in hydrocracking have any good solutions to this issue of high iron ion levels in tail oil. Or, does anyone have any similar experiences they could share?
A portion of the tail oil can be discharged externally to control its circulation rate, thereby maintaining a stable pressure drop across the bed.
Our factory was also forced to shut down for treatment due to extremely high iron content; later, with the use of filtration devices, it became necessary to take samples on a daily basis. We also intensified our visual inspections of the samples. High iron content poses significant risks, so it’s important to pay close attention to this issue

The high iron ion content is also due to the previous issues; if it’s already high, it’s too late. Excessive outward throwing defeats the purpose of a complete cycle, and material balance may not allow it either. It still needs to be controlled in the early stage of the device.
