The resistance in the benzene washing tower of our plant has increased to 15 KPa. After 30 hours of steam purging, the resistance increased further. What could be the cause of this? How should it be addressed?
The resistance calculation for the benzene washing tower is generally done using the gas pressure before the tower minus the gas pressure after the tower. The gas pressure measurement point before the benzene washing tower is located on the gas pipeline behind the final cooling tower; I’m not sure if the equipment in the original post is set up in this way If that’s the case, I think the most likely reason is a blockage in the gas pipeline before the benzene washing tower and after the final cooling tower, resulting in a resistance of 15,000 pascals. After purging the benzene washing tower, more tar residues, heavy washing oil, naphthalene, and other substances are blown down, further blocking the pipes and causing an even greater increase in resistance. Could we try purging the gas pipeline before the benzene washing tower separately to fully drain any liquid that has accumulated there? The original poster can try it when there is no other option. . .
Steam purging is not suitable for use in benzene washing towers, primary coolers, or final coolers; steam can easily cause the oil to carbonize or become asphaltic, which not only fails to reduce resistance but also exacerbates blockages. The most effective method is to activate a backup device and carry out hot ammonia cleaning!

Replace the packing! It’s probably blocked. By the way, what kind of filler do you use?
The quality of the cleaning oil you are using must be extremely poor; there is too much crystallization. During steam purging, is the temperature inside the tower uniform? Is the substance discharged dark red in color? Does it solidify at slightly lower temperatures?
Can’t the primary cooler and final cooling tower be purged with steam either?
