There are three companies involved in coal-to-olefins production: Shenhua Baotou, Datang Dolun, and Sinopec Yanshan Petrochemical. For coal-to-oil production, there are also three companies: Shenhua Ordos for direct coal liquefaction, and Yitai and Lu’an for indirect liquefaction. For coal-to-natural gas, I think the NDRC has approved three projects; there are many others that haven’t been approved yet. That’s all I know.
Some of the information is not entirely accurate. The three companies involved in coal-to-olefins production are Shenhua Baotou (using domestic MTO technology), Shenhua Ningmei, and Datang Dolun (using Lurgi MTP technology). Coal-to-oil conversion can be carried out through direct liquefaction or indirect liquefaction; there is only one company engaged in direct liquefaction, namely Shenhua Ordos, which operates a plant with a capacity of one million tons per year. For indirect liquefaction, there are three companies: Shenhua Ordos with a capacity of 180,000 tons per year, Yitai with a capacity of 160,000 tons per year, and Lu’an with also a capacity of 160,000 tons per year. All of these companies use Sinopec’s synthetic oil technology. There is also the Shenhua-Ningmei-SASOL partnership for 3.6 million tons of indirect liquefaction.
