I’ve run into a tricky problem recently: I need to design a heat exchanger for a hotel, with domestic water flowing in the shell side and steam flowing in the tube side. I was thinking of using 304 stainless steel throughout, but I feel that would be a waste of material; therefore I’m considering using all carbon steel, or carbon steel for the shell side and stainless steel for the tube side. No matter what I consider, none of these options seem right. Actually, the designed pressure for the shell side is 1.1 Mpa, while it should be 0.7 Mpa. Could some experts give me some advice? ?
Then choose copper-lined or stainless steel-lined carbon steel; that will do, with stainless steel used for the tube side
If a positive-displacement heat exchanger is used in the heating system and steam flows through the tube side, I recommend using carbon steel; however, since circulating water flows through the shell side, oxygen corrosion may occur, so stainless steel is advised – that’s my personal opinion

It must be made of stainless steel, or carbon steel lined with stainless steel, or copper – materials that do not cause corrosion to water.
What is a hotel used for? For those who have high requirements regarding cleanliness, stainless steel is the better choice; at least the water tanks and such should be made of it
Carbon steel can develop rusting problems when used; I’ve encountered that. The rooms are discharging yellow water, which is quite difficult to deal with.
Stainless steel for the tube side, carbon steel for the shell side
Send the steam to the shell side and the water to the tubes; using stainless steel for the tube side will do!
In terms of utility, don’t give too much thought to cost issues; it is assumed that the heat exchange amount will be small.
