The main functions of transformer oil: (1) Insulation: Transformer oil has a much higher insulation strength than air. Immersing insulating materials in oil not only improves their insulation strength but also protects them from moisture damage. (2) Heat dissipation: Transformer oil has a high specific heat capacity, making it suitable as a coolant. The heat generated during the operation of the transformer causes the oil near the core and windings to expand and rise in temperature; through convection upward and downward within the oil, this heat is dissipated via the radiator, ensuring the proper operation of the transformer. (3) Arc extinguishing function: In oil circuit breakers and on the on-load tap changers of transformers, arcs are generated when the contacts switch. Due to the good thermal conductivity of transformer oil, and its ability to displace a large amount of gas under the high temperature of an arc, thereby generating high pressure, the arc-quenching performance of this medium is improved, allowing the arc to be extinguished quickly.
