The cooled fluid should flow through the shell side to facilitate heat transfer. From the perspective of cleaning and convenience: Fluids that are dirty or prone to scaling should flow through the tube side, to facilitate the cleaning of the heat exchange tubes. Steam generally flows through the shell side, which facilitates the discharge of condensate; moreover, the steam is relatively clean, so the shell side does not need to be cleaned.

By using corrosive media in the tube side, the requirements for the material of the casing can be reduced; Media that tend to form scale are placed in the tube side, facilitating cleaning and maintenance ; Media under higher pressure flows through the tube side, which helps to reduce the mechanical strength requirements for the shell ; Media with high viscosity and low flow rate flow through the shell side, which can improve the heat transfer coefficient. Therefore: ACDEF go through the pipe side, and B goes through the shell side.
