There is no such thing as good or bad; only the strength of the relationship and the amount of funding matter.
Each design institute and each research center can only study one desulfurization process in great detail; they all claim to be competent for any process. In reality, however, depending on the region, resource environment, scale, and concentration levels, the appropriate desulfurization process varies.
Flue gas desulfurization requires the selection of a suitable approach based on the resource advantages of one’s own enterprise as well as those available locally. Factors such as whether to use dry or wet methods, the comprehensive utilization of desulfurization by-products, and the choice of desulfurizing agents all need to be taken into consideration; only in this way can the project be carried out with confidence

(1) Longyuan Environmental Protection (Guodian Power) has adopted the limestone-gypsum wet flue gas desulfurization technology from the German company Thünen Müller. The company has participated in numerous Sino-foreign cooperative demonstration projects, such as the Shandong Huangdao Power Plant and Taiyuan No.1 Thermal Power Plant jointly developed by China and Japan, as well as the Chongqing Power Plant, Zhejiang Banshan Power Plant, Yunnan Xiaolongtan Power Plant and other projects carried out through Sino-German cooperation; it holds a relatively leading position in the field of desulfurization. In June 2001, Longyuan Environmental Protection took on the general contracting role for the desulfurization renovation project of Unit 4 (200MW) at Beijing Jingneng Thermal Power Co., Ltd., which was the first desulfurization project that the company undertook entirely on its own. (2) Zhejiang Feida: Zhejiang Feida is a key enterprise in the field of electrostatic precipitators. The company invested over 30 million yuan to introduce ABB’s charged dry flue gas desulfurization (NID) technology from Sweden, and completed a desulfurization project for a medium-sized power unit (the 70MW unit at Zhejiang Juzhou Chemical Industry Company’s own power plant); this unit is currently operating well. Thanks to its many years of experience in flue gas treatment, as well as its rapid progress in flue gas desulfurization, the company possesses strong comprehensive competitiveness in this field. (3) Longjing Environmental Protection is a key enterprise in China’s environmental protection industry; it ranks among the top ten companies in the electrostatic precipitator sector and possesses extensive experience in flue gas treatment (dust removal). Longjing Environmental Protection plans to use the funds raised from the new shares, amounting to 162.4 billion yuan, to invest in the flue gas desulfurization industry; the current technical partner is the American company GE. Longjing Company and China Energy Conservation Investment Corporation jointly established Fujian Longyan Longjing Desulfurization Engineering Co., Ltd., with a registered capital of 39.6 million yuan; Longjing Company holds 80% of the shares in the company. Longjing Desulfurization Company is mainly engaged in the design, manufacturing, consulting services, and project contracting for desulfurization and dust removal equipment. It was responsible for the project to localize the flue gas dust removal and desulfurization systems in coal-fired power plants, funded by special national debt funds in 1999. Longjing Environmental Protection is currently still in the early stage of introducing flue gas desulfurization technology. (4) Kaidi Power invested 49 million yuan to introduce the RCFB-FGB dry flue gas desulfurization technology from the German company WULL, in order to produce desulfurization devices suitable for power plant boilers with a capacity of less than 300,000 kilowatts. The company also possesses China’s first flue gas desulfurization testing device that utilizes the rotary spray drying method and features entirely independent intellectual property rights. On July 19, 2000, the Wuhan Flue Gas Desulfurization Environmental Protection Industry Base, jointly established by six entities including Kaidi Power, was officially inaugurated. The announcement currently proposes to issue new shares to introduce wet flue gas desulfurization technology, which will expand the company’s scope of operations in the field of flue gas desulfurization. (5) Kowloon Power is primarily engaged in power generation and power technology services. The company raised funds through the issuance of new shares to acquire a controlling stake in Chongqing Yuanda Environmental Protection (Group) Company, which has a registered capital of 50 million yuan, thereby entering the flue gas desulfurization industry. It employs the limestone-gypsum wet desulfurization technology developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries of Japan. The company will also carry out the \"High-Tech Industrialization Demonstration Project for Flue Gas Desulfurization Technologies and Equipment\", with a total investment of 165 million yuan as specified in the document issued by the Planning Commission (Document No. Jigaoji 1297). (6) Tsinghua Tongfang possesses its own intellectual property rights for dry circulating fluidized bed flue gas desulfurization technology, which is suitable for units with a capacity of 300MW or less. This technology is currently being used in the flue gas desulfurization demonstration project at Tsinghua University’s test power plant. The company has also developed an integrated technology for flue gas desulfurization and dust removal using liquid column injection, which is currently being applied in the flue gas desulfurization demonstration project at Shenyang Fertilizer Plant. After three months of trial operation, it has passed the inspection by the relevant authorities. A comprehensive score is assigned based on the progress of desulfurization technologies in various companies, as well as their potential to expand the flue gas desulfurization market in the future. Thanks to the strong support from power companies, Longyuan Environmental Protection is currently the most powerful player in the flue gas desulfurization industry.
