For tall towers, especially those with multiple tubular sections that are very high – for example, tubular sections 10 meters in height – is it necessary to perform flaw detection on the butt welds? I wonder if there are any regulations regarding this?

Upstairs, I couldn’t find any standard specifications that specify requirements for ultrasonic testing of the butt welds at the joints of the cylindrical sections. However, many project drawings do include such requirements. I personally believe that ultrasonic testing is necessary, but it’s difficult to determine what proportion of these welds should be tested!

The standards only specify that steel should be selected in accordance with the requirements for steel used in pressure-bearing components; they don’t mention anything regarding weld inspection. I think inspection is not necessary, as the skirt cylinder is different from the pressure-bearing cylinder and does not experience membrane stress. But you said that the skirt cylinder is quite important; I need to conduct flaw detection, and it’s not impossible to do that. It would be better if it can be done, though it will just incur some additional costs.
