I am currently working on my graduation project, and when it comes to calculating the tower diameter, is it better to use a general pressure drop correlation chart or the Bain-Hougen correlation formula? I used the Bain-Hougen equation to calculate that the tower diameter is 0.67; should I round it up to 0.7 or 0.8? 0.7 isn’t very commonly used, right?
Little Demon: (1) Using a pressure drop correlation diagram is more accurate, but it’s a bit more verbose. (2) The tower number should preferably be even; odd numbers are not recommended. So your 0.8m is correct.

I saw a design similar to mine, with a processing capacity of 4000 M3/H; in that design, the diameter of the tower was 0.8 M and the height of the packing layer was 12 M. Is this design feasible in actual factory conditions?

Little Fairy: The design of the tower is very flexible: (1) The dot density range is 0.5–0.8; as a result, the quality of the tower’s structure is much lower, and naturally, its operational flexibility is also reduced. Theoretically, the tower diameter is at its maximum at 0.5, with an elastic margin of about 40%; in other words, if you design it for 10,000 tons, production can exceed around 14,000 tons ; At 0.8, the tower diameter is at its minimum, with 0% elastic margin; if you design it for 10,000 tons, then it will be 10,000 tons. (2) The system factor has the same effect as the pan-point rate ; (3) As for what you said about whether it “fits the actual conditions of the factory,” is that the case? You haven’t provided enough information, so it’s impossible to answer. If you look at the data from the PCPC software, you’ll know what data should be provided. Furthermore, in actual industrial calculations, when carried out rigorously, they are far more complex than what is covered in chemical engineering principles ; (4) In practical work, it is recommended that you use the software PCPC (Chinese for packed tower) and WTR (Chinese for plate tower) for calculations, as they will provide you with valuable support. The graduation project is just for fun; it’s not something that requires in-depth consideration.
