Series measurement of multi-stage pumps

High-pressure boiler feed water pump: fracture of the shaft coupling on the high-pressure side. Please advise on the causes and methods for serial measurement
After removing the thrust pads and balance discs, the total axial movement measured by moving the rotor is the actual value； With the balance disc installed, and without the thrust pads or the rotating rotor, what is measured is half of the axial displacement. Seeing that it’s a boiler feed pump, my first reaction is that it’s used for evacuation.
