In desalination and other applications that require large amounts of water (or solvent) to be evaporated, we often use multi-stage flash evaporation and multi-effect evaporation. For example, desalination processes can be designed with 50 stages of flash evaporation. However, I’m not quite clear about the fundamental difference between multi-stage flash evaporation and multi-effect evaporation. In my view, multi-stage flash evaporation also recovers the heat from secondary steam; so how should the concepts of \"stages\" and \"effects\" be understood? We are working on a project with a foreign design company; they designed 12-stage, 14-stage, and 16-stage evaporation systems – in English, these are referred to as 12-stages, 14-stages, 16-stages. If it refers to efficiency, then the correct term should be “effective”. We need help with this.
The stage refers to the number of times the liquid material is evaporated. Efficiency refers to whether the steam generated at each stage of evaporation is used to heat the feed liquid. Each use counts as one cycle. stage means level, and effective means efficiency. Thank you for your help, but I asked foreigners about this, and it seems they don’t classify things in that way. Even in cases of 16-stage evaporation, the steam produced at each stage is used to heat the material; they still don’t refer to it as multi-effect, but rather as multi-stage. They also said they have designed systems with four stages of evaporation. Based on this understanding, there are probably more differences between multi-stage and multi-effect systems.

These two concepts refer to different things. Multi-stage flash evaporation refers to the method of evaporation, which involves multiple stages, whereas multi-effect evaporation relates to the way in which energy is utilized during the evaporation process. As you mentioned, multi-stage flash evaporation can be designed with as many stages as desired. However, in the case of multi-effect evaporation, the most common configuration is four-effect, meaning that one unit of energy is reused four times, allowing for the generation of steam four times. Based on your description, the multi-stage flash evaporation system you have designed is at most two-effect, since the steam is only used twice
