However, shares won’t be distributed to design staff within 5 years; they’re usually given to the core members of the company. In terms of income: if you start working as a fresh graduate, your earnings won’t be very high; for those with a bachelor’s degree, the pre-tax monthly salary is around 3K–4K. This amount increases by about 1K per year, and after 5 years of work, the pre-tax salary is roughly 10K, with 14 pay periods per year. I know someone who has been working in piping for 5 years and earns over 8K per month. Job responsibilities: Since you work in a power plant, your field of expertise is either electrical or thermal engineering. Those with an electrical background work in chemical engineering design firms, where they are responsible for designing the electrical circuits of factories, while those with a thermal engineering background work in the equipment departments, handling mechanical equipment such as turbines, compressors, and pumps. In terms of career development: it involves progressing to the role of senior engineer or team leader. If one holds such a position, they can assign manufacturers to carry out tasks, and this entitles them to additional income beyond their salary. Senior engineers or team leaders typically work for about ten years, with an estimated monthly income of 20,000. Managers at the corporate level in large engineering companies earn the most (500,000–800,000), followed by middle managers and project managers (300,000–500,000), and then by junior staff (200,000–300,000). Project managers are usually from the chemical industry; those who work on processes and pipelines come from that field as well. Working at a design institute is quite demanding; sometimes overtime is required. The job involves drawing diagrams, and one spends all day in front of the computer, so it’s a role suited for those who can tolerate loneliness. The design institute is located in Urumqi, where life is quite lively; manufacturers often treat people to meals, and there are many business trips on site.
