I am a meter technician, but I’m very confused about how to set and calibrate the range of transmitters, as well as how to perform range transfers. For example, if a transmitter needs to be relocated, how is that done exactly? Is it the upper or lower limit that is adjusted using the handheld controller? There’s no need to rush; the range of the transmitter is determined by the process requirements. The operator units come with instructions, and after using them a few times, one will understand how to use them – it’s not a big deal.
It is calculated based on the density of silicone oil, the density of the medium, and the flange spacing – in other words, it’s about balancing out that pressure difference. Think about it carefully; it’s quite simple, though it’s not easy to explain in words
For pressure (differential pressure) transmitters, once the single-flange (or double-flange, pressure guide tube, etc.) assembly of the instrument along with the gauge head have been fully installed, care must be taken to use the isolation fluid correctly in cases where a diaphragm flange design is not used. When it is confirmed that the pressure (differential pressure) at the point being measured is zero, the output value of the transmitter at that moment represents the amount by which adjustment is needed. Adjustment can be made in either the positive or negative direction, depending on the actual situation. For intelligent pressure (differential pressure) transmitters, the positive and negative adjustments can be made directly using a handheld controller, which essentially modifies the upper and lower limits of measurement; the range remains unchanged.
Transmitter migration is very easy – just loosen the flange and set the pressure to 0; there’s no need to worry about any height conversions!
