Your question is too broad; the principles are rationality, convenience, safety, material savings, etc
It is a field of study; even a whole book may not be enough to cover it. Design institutes have piping specialists whom you can consult.
This is indeed a difficult question to answer. There are people with expertise in thermal engineering in the design institute who are responsible for this area; I suggest you consult those specialists!
