Are all the methanol catalysts used in methanol production from coke oven gas, methanol production via ammonia synthesis, and coal-based methanol production identical? Which methanol catalyst is the best in China currently? What about the price? What are the differences in the various process parameters for producing methanol using these three processes?
There are many such discussions on the forum. The Nanhua Research Institute in China is quite good; the Southwest Research Institute is also excellent and has been developing rapidly recently. The catalysts used in the production of methanol from coke oven gas and coal are both mono-alcohol catalysts, while the catalyst used in the production of methanol as a by-product of ammonia synthesis is a bifunctional catalyst. Hydric alcohols and monohydric alcohols differ mainly in their gas composition. Catalysts are very important; don’t skimp on this expense – it’s not worth it at all. I feel the same way. The so-called good catalysts available in China cost 110,000 yuan – quite cheap – but they stop working after less than 2 years. High-quality catalysts from abroad can last for 4 to 5 years.
