In Part 5, Section on Pump Arrangement, of HG20546 version 2009, on page P91, it is specified in 2.2.1 that when there are air coolers above the pipe gallery, the centerline of the pump outlet pipe should be located 600 mm to 1200 mm outside the centerline of the pipe gallery columns; whereas when there are no air coolers above the pipe gallery, the centerline of the pump outlet pipe should be located 600 mm to 1200 mm inside the centerline of the pipe gallery columns. Could you please explain why such regulations exist? What considerations are at play?
This post was last edited by zpg on 2011-4-27 at 18:15. The reason is mainly for safety reasons: since the air cooler has a certain load, this load is supported by the columns in the pipe rack. Placing it on the outside of the pipe rack prevents the fluid from splashing directly onto the columns in the event of a leak. If the fluid is corrosive, flammable, or explosive, corrosion or ignition can lead to serious consequences. Of course, for pumps that handle water at normal temperatures, a little spillage isn’t a big issue, but regulations need to take into account various types of fluids. The core principle is to \"avoid the columns and protect the equipment.\" I remember that the specifications require that when an air cooler is present, pumps with an operating temperature above 340°C should not be installed in pipe galleries. Without an air cooler, without that large piece of equipment above your head, you can arrange things however you like, as long as safety and ease of maintenance are ensured. Note, OP – this rule is not mandatory. The terms used are things like “it is advisable” and “it should not be done”, rather than mandatory requirements such as “must”, “shall not”, or “strictly prohibited”. . Pay attention to these small terms in the specifications.
