I currently work for a company that is ranked among the top 500 in the world and among the top 10 in Asia. I’m worried that I won’t be able to find a job upon returning to my home country. I come from humble origins and don’t have any connections; I work in the field of instrument control. I’ve worked my way up through the ranks, mostly in private enterprises in China – starting as an instrument technician, then moving on to team leader, supervisor, and project manager. It took me six years to reach these positions, during which I changed jobs twice. The year before last, I was fortunate enough to catch the attention of the VP at my current company, and I became an instrument engineer there, which is one rank above that of a supervisor. My technical skills are quite varied, but these days I don’t really focus on learning new things anymore; I learn as I go when faced with major issues. There have been no major shutdowns so far. I have a basic understanding of the mainstream DCS and PLC systems, though I’m not proficient in design work. My contract will expire at the end of this year, and I don’t want to continue working here. The main reasons are the rapid appreciation of the RMB, and also because I miss home. But lately, I’ve submitted my resume online, yet none of the companies have shown interest in me. I’m not sure why, and now I’m a bit worried. I believe it shouldn’t be too difficult to work as a equipment supervisor in small or medium-sized enterprises.

Since your expectations might be quite high, large domestic companies, such as state-owned enterprises, are not very willing to spend a lot of money to recruit talent. However, some newer types of companies are willing to invest heavily in this regard. Don’t worry; your mentor might not have appeared yet. It’s better to identify a few companies that you like, establish contact with them first, and fill the spots once they become available.
