Which has a greater specific gravity, coal tar or water?
Relative density (water=1): 1.18~1.23
The national standard specifies that the density of grade 1 tar is 1.15–1.21 (at 20 degrees Celsius), while the density of water is 1.0 (at 20 degrees Celsius)

The composition of tar is relatively complex, with the density of its components ranging from 0.95 to 1.25. The light oils present in tar have a density lower than that of water; during the oil-water separation process in tar processing, the light oils remain on the upper layer while the other components stay on the lower layer. Its average density is greater than that of water.

Different types of tar have varying properties. The low-temperature coal tar obtained by dry distillation at 500–600 degrees has a high content of alkanes, a lower amount of aromatics, and a relatively low density, ranging between 0.9–1.05 g/m3 ; High-temperature coal tar contains a large amount of pitch as well as numerous aromatic compounds; it has little alkane content, and its density is greater than 1.0 (relative to water), ranging from 1.18 to 1.23 g/m3. Analysis and measurement can be carried out based on the actual situation.
