How much do you know about biological desulfurization?
This method provides the best desulfurization effect, but the quality of the sulfur product is relatively poor; it requires careful processing, is suitable only on a small scale, and has high operating costs. The more well-known method is Shell’s biological desulfurization. Principle: H2S gas is brought into contact with a carbonate solution containing sulfur-busing bacteria in a scrubber tower; the H2S dissolves in the alkaline solution and enters the bioreactor along with it. In the aeration environment of the bioreactor, sulfides are oxidized to elemental sulfur by bacteria from the Thiobacillus family. Sulfur is precipitated from the bioreactor in the form of a slurry; it can be further dried to become sulfur powder, or melted to produce commercial sulfur.
