Periodic operations subject the coke tower to harsh working conditions such as rapid cooling and heating, as well as high-pressure water impacts, resulting in tower corrosion, deformation, bulging, and even weld cracks and tower tilting. The deformation of the tower is related to the material of the coke tower; in coke towers made of carbon steel, the diameter at the bulged area can increase by 200–250 mm. Coke towers made of carbon-molybdenum or chromium-molybdenum steel exhibit less bulging and radial expansion. The service life of the chromomolybdenum steel coke tower is 12 years ; The carbon-molybdenum steel coke tower has a lifespan of 8 years ; The carbon steel coke tower is only 7 years old. In the past, grade 20 steel was commonly used for the materials of coke towers in China, with wall thicknesses of 24–28 mm; after being in use for a certain period of time, bulging and deformation of these towers occurred as mentioned above.
