Hello, the liquid spray density of a packed tower refers to the amount of liquid sprayed per unit time and per unit area of the tower cross-section. The formula for calculating it is: U = Lh/0.785D2, where U represents the liquid spray density in m3/(m2·h), Lh represents the volume of liquid sprayed per hour in m3/h, and D represents the diameter of the packed tower in meters. The formulas used by Chinese scholars (from Tianjin University and elsewhere) also include parameters such as specific surface area, which is obviously more reasonable; these formulas have been made publicly available. China’s hydraulic software for packed towers, PCPC, also uses accurate formulas, and practice has shown that they are more precise. However, I am out of town and don’t have the information available at the moment.

In fact, to ensure that the filler is wetted, there is a minimum spraying density; this minimum spraying density is related to the minimum wetting rate. Minimum spray density: Umin = Lw * at, where Lw is the minimum wetting rate of the packing; 0.08 is used for values below 75 mm, and 0.12 is used for values above that; at is the specific surface area of the filler

This applies to packed towers; for structured packing towers, the minimum spray density is an empirical value
Some sources state that the minimum spray density for structured packing is 0.2
