Alkali embrittlement refers to the brittleness exhibited by pipes under alkaline conditions at certain temperatures, making them prone to cracking under stress; for more details, refer to GB50316 regarding alkaline condition combinations
The stress corrosion cracking of metals in alkaline solutions is known as alkali embrittlement; carbon steel is prone to alkali embrittlement across almost all concentration ranges where the sodium hydroxide concentration is above 50%； The minimum temperature for alkaline embrittlement is 50°C; when the surface of pipes is subjected to prolonged exposure to an alkaline fluid at a certain concentration, or to repeated contact with such a fluid, brittleness and cracking can occur under the combined effects of high temperature and stress.
