The market for synthesizing 2-methylpyridine using the nitrile method is decent; the technology is already quite mature. Unfortunately, the market demand isn’t very high
Currently, the main methods for synthesizing 2-methylpyridine include the coal tar separation method, the synthesis from acetaldehyde and ammonia, and the ammacyanoacetylene method. 2-Methylpyridine can be obtained by reacting ethyl cyanide with ethylene under the catalysis of (Me4N2CoB10H12)2; ethylene and ammonia, under the catalysis of PtC, can yield both 2-methylpyridine and 2-methyl-5-ethylpyridine. Additionally, the Dutch company DSM NV has developed a method for synthesizing 2-methylpyridine and small amounts of 2-methyl-5-ethylpyridine using acrylonitrile and propylene. The company’s production method for 2-methylpyridine is a synthetically developed method using acetylene and acetonitrile. The key technologies are catalyst selection and optimization of process conditions. Compared with other processes, this method offers great process flexibility, milder conditions, high conversion and yield rates, as well as a high benefit-to-investment ratio. This technical method is at the forefront of the 2-methylpyridine production market.
