Methanol/water solutions in the laboratory are colorless, but water containing methanol from gas fields is colored, and conventional titration can be affected by this inherent color. How should water containing methanol be measured? How is aqueous methanol measured then?

Aqueous methanol – with trace amounts of water – can be analyzed using a Karl Fischer coulometric moisture analyzer. Our company uses chromatography for analysis. Initially, two columns were used for this purpose; PEG400 was employed to analyze methanol in water (the water peak caused severe tailing, so it was stopped being used later). Porapak Q was used to analyze water in methanol. Now, both types of columns are used, and when analyzing methanol in water, the results are more than 2 times lower than the actual values; however, the analysis of water in methanol works fairly well. If you are dealing with trace amounts of water, the Karl Fischer method is more accurate. I don’t know how to conduct standard analysis; I also want to learn a more accurate method of analysis, so I’m waiting here with you for everyone’s help.

Trace amounts of water in methanol can be detected using the Karl Fischer method. There is methanol in the water; we use gas chromatography for this purpose.
