Our unit uses the Coulomb method to analyze the salt content in crude oil. One gram of crude oil is taken, along with 1.5 milliliters of xylene and 2 milliliters of an alcohol-water mixture as solvents. This method works well when the crude oil contains little water; however, when the water content reaches 10% or more, it becomes impossible to extract the salts, and the solution cannot be separated from the crude oil, making it impossible to determine the salt content. I would appreciate it if the seniors here could help come up with some ideas; great rewards await!
When the water content in crude oil is high, to determine the salt content, oil and water must first be separated using mechanical methods (centrifugation), after which the volumes of oil and water are measured separately. The separated oil is sampled again to analyze its salt content, while the salt content in the separated water is also determined. Finally, these two salt contents are comprehensively calculated based on the oil-water volume ratio after separation, thereby obtaining the salt content of the original crude oil (including the water present in it). For crude oil used as a trading commodity, **the industry has similar regulations; it seems that its water content should be less than 0.3% (I can’t remember exactly).
