As the title suggests, in a floating-head heat exchanger, is it easier to clean the tube side or the shell side? And which side, the one with the higher medium temperature, should be used for the tube side or the shell side?
It should be the shell side. It can have a core that can be removed. The temperature of the medium isn’t the main factor; what matters is that the side where scaling tends to occur should be the shell side.
It should be a tube train; by removing the end caps, the tube bundle in the middle can be cleaned directly with a high-pressure water gun. Media with high temperature should flow in the shell side.

Reply to 3#: I am striving to do my best. However, the chemical process design manual states that the shell side is easy to clean; I’m not sure what the actual situation is like during on-site maintenance
