China Ferroalloy Online [www.cnfeol.com] – Manganese Ore Processing Technologies and Energy-Saving Methods I. Introduction to the Uses of Manganese Ore and Its Technical and Economic Indicators Uses and technical and economic indicators: Manganese ore products include metallurgical manganese ore, manganese carbonate powder, manganese dioxide powder for chemical use, and manganese dioxide powder for battery applications. The metallurgical, light industry, and chemical sectors that use manganese ore products have different quality requirements for these products depending on their intended uses. (1) Quality requirements for manganese ore in the metallurgical industry: For ore used in steelmaking, pig iron production, and manganous pig iron, there are no restrictions on the iron content; it is preferable that the total content of manganese and iron in the ore be between 40% and 50%. When smelting manganese-based alloys of various grades, certain requirements are placed on the manganese content in the ore and the ratio of manganese to ferromanganese. Smelting of medium and low carbon ferromanganese; the ore contains 36%–40% manganese, with a ferromanganese ratio of 6–8.5 and a phosphorus-manganese ratio of 0.002–0.0036 ; Smelting of carbon ferromanganese: the ore contains 33%–40% manganese, with a ferromanganese ratio of 3.8–7.8 and a phosphorus-manganese ratio of 0.002–0.005 ; Smelting of manganese-silicon alloy: the ore contains 29%–35% manganese, with an iron-to-manganese ratio of 3.3–7.5 and a phosphorus-to-manganese ratio of 0.0016–0.0048 ; Blast furnace ferromanganese, with an ore manganese content of 30%, a ferromanganese ratio of 2–7, and a phosphorus-manganese ratio of 0.005. (II) Quality requirements for manganese ore in the chemical and light industry sectors. In the chemical industry, manganese ore is primarily used to produce manganese dioxide, manganese sulfate, and potassium permanganate; it is also used to manufacture manganese carbonate, manganese nitrate, and manganese chloride, among other products. Chemical-grade manganese dioxide powder is required to have an MnO2 content of over 50% (Table 3.3.3); when used in the production of manganese sulfate, the levels of Fe should be ≤3%, Al2O3 ≤3%, CaO ≤0.5%, and MgO ≤0.1% ; When producing potassium permanganate, Fe ≤ 5%, SiO2 ≤ 5%, and Al2O3 ≤ 4%. Natural manganese dioxide is a raw material used in the manufacture of dry batteries, and the higher the MnO2 content, the better. The generally established factory standards for harmful elements such as Ni, Cu, CO, and Pb are: Cu<0.01%, Ni<0.03%, Co<0.02%, Pb<0.02%. The particle size of the mineral powder must be less than 0.12 mm.
