What you are referring to are heat exchangers with more than two flow paths: fluid enters at one end and exits at another, so it cannot be sealed off by welding or using a flat head; a closed loop must be formed. As for the type of head to be used, there are regulatory requirements in place. A flat head isn’t really considered a head at all – it’s just a flat plate. It is generally used in applications with low pressure, small diameter, and low stress levels, in order to save costs.
