How is the spacing between baffle plates in a fixed-tube-sheet design calculated? GB150 only specifies two requirements: it must be no less than 1/5 of the shell diameter and no less than 50 mm, as well as a maximum unsupported spacing. Does this mean that I can choose any value within the range of 1/5 of the diameter, 50 mm, and the maximum unsupported spacing? Seeking advice
It’s best if the process parameters are specified; if nothing is given, I* assume a spacing similar to the shell diameter.

The spacing is large, resulting in low shell-side resistance (pressure drop), but the heat transfer coefficient decreases; therefore, it’s not possible to choose values arbitrarily – both the heat transfer coefficient (efficiency) and the pressure drop must be taken into account ; 3. Strictly speaking, this requires scientific calculation; one cannot consider the issue from merely a mechanical manufacturing perspective. As a technical professional, regardless of your field of specialization, you should not focus only on issues related to your own specialty ; 4. As is customary, process engineers calculate the heat transfer, taking into account mechanical factors such as the spacing between baffles; in other words, they also have an understanding of mechanical principles. Conversely, mechanical engineers must be aware of basic process issues – arbitrary choices are absolutely not permitted.
