The biggest waste in coal-to-gas projects is the large amount of carbon dioxide generated. The current popular technique is the underground storage of carbon dioxide; it seems that Shenhua’s coal-to-oil project has already implemented this method. Another application is in oil extraction, where it is used to increase oil recovery rates.
Reply to 8# lflsedin: Using carbon dioxide for oil extraction is a good method at present; however, the carbon dioxide used in oil extraction does not disappear completely – it comes back to the surface as well, only with an increased rate. I propose this idea in order to use carbon dioxide to generate new energy. Hydrogen research institutes in Germany, carbon science companies in the United States, and several companies in Japan are all conducting research, and there are demonstration projects as well. It’s by no means a false proposition; it’s just that energy consumption is an issue that requires long-term attention and urgent resolution.
The most important thing is how to solve the issue of the hydrogen source; if it’s possible to produce large amounts of hydrogen without generating CO2, then all other problems become easier to address. The conversion rate of CO2 methanation is not good, but it can first be converted to CO and then methaneated. Otherwise, all the efforts made will still result in the production of large amounts of CO2. No one knows what the consequences will be of current methods for reducing CO2 emissions, such as landfilling and oil displacement.
