According to general standards, pump motors should meet the following requirements: a flow rate margin of 10% and a head margin of 20%; therefore, the motor should generally have a 30% margin. However, the motors supplied by pump manufacturers these days usually only have a 15% margin.

The selection is made based on the performance parameters provided by the pump manufacturer; generally, for larger motors, a power value of 1.15 times the pump’s shaft power is chosen, and then a motor with a power level close to this calculated value is selected. For smaller motors, 1.2 times the shaft power is used as the reference. The shaft power of a pump is generally determined through performance tests conducted by manufacturers using water as the medium; for oils as the working medium, a shaft power of 1.15 times is sufficient. The density of oil is less than that of water.
Determine the allowance based on the size of the motor. Motor shaft power ≤ 15 kW; motor power = shaft power × 1.25 ; 15kW < motor shaft power < 75kW, motor power = shaft power × 1.15 ; Motor shaft power > 75 kW; motor power = shaft power × 1.1. Our company follows this approach when selecting the power of pumps: a 10% margin for flow rate and a 10% margin for head pressure. The motor shaft power is then calculated, with a safety factor of 5–15% applied to the motor capacity.
