My company uses Yokogawa DY series vortex flow meters for compressed air; the pressure rating is 0.8 mbar and the range is 600 m3/h. However, the actual flow rate at the site is 700 m3/h. I am now planning to increase the range to 1200 m3/h. What negative consequences could arise from operating it in this manner over a long period of time?
If the range of the vortex flowmeter in use is changed from 600 m3/h to 1200 m3/h, and the actual flow rate is 700 m3/h, then the range of the DCS should also be changed to 1200 m3/h; this way, the vortex flowmeter will be able to function properly. If the DCS range remains unchanged, the flow meter’s output signal will be around 13.33 MA, while the DCS displays a flow rate of 400 m3/h, which is significantly too low – by about 300 m3 per hour.

If it is a current output, it affects the output accuracy; if it is a pulse, then it does not. It’s better to have a reasonable range, such as 800~1000

It certainly has some impact on measurement accuracy, but as long as it remains within its specified range, there should be no problems. One of our pressure transmitters is designed for a pressure of 10 KPa, but the actual pressure is usually around 60 KPa; therefore we adjusted the range to 100 KPa, and it has been operating without any issues for almost half a year now.
Choosing a range of 1200 m3/h poses no problem for long-term operation.
{:1_90:} Personally, I think it’s best to first check the gauge data sheet to see what the maximum flow rate is. If 1200 falls within the acceptable range, then there’s no problem in making the changes using the handheld controller to adjust the gauge and to set the DCD value to match as well. Please point out any mistakes in my opinion.

The key is to check what the flow rate is in m/s; generally, for gases, it should not exceed 80 m/s. This can be seen by connecting a handheld controller, or an approximate estimate can be made. As long as the instrument displays the value after you adjust the range, then there is no problem with it
The flow meter’s range is 600 m3/H, which means the range is twice as large. I believe that operating it for such a long time will have an impact on the accuracy of the flow measurement as well as on the performance of the flow meter itself
