The production of tetrachloroethylene is carried out using chloromethane, chlorine, and carbon tetrachloride as raw materials.
In China, the main production methods for tetrachloroethylene are the calcium carbide method and the carbon tetrachloride conversion method. There are also methods using dichloroethane for chlorination available in China now. Abroad, the main methods are the dichloroethane chlorination method, the dichloroethane oxychlorination method, and the carbon tetrachloride conversion method.
I have done this. The purity of the final product for trichloroethylene can reach 99.99%, while that for tetrachloroethylene can reach 95%. The main raw materials are: acetylene and chlorine. Acetylene gas is produced by reacting calcium carbide with water, while chlorine is obtained by electrolyzing brine (the chlor-alkali industry). 1. First, acetylene and chlorine are reacted in a tetrachloroethane solvent to obtain crude tetrachloroethane ; 2. Tetrachloroethane is purified in a tetrachloroethane distillation column to yield 95% pure tetrachloroethane. 3. Through a catalytic HCl removal reaction, tetrachloroethane produces crude trichloroethylene along with hydrogen chloride gas as a by-product (which can be used to produce hydrochloric acid). 4. The crude trichloroethylene is processed in a low-boiling-point distillation column to remove by-products such as dichloroethane. 5. Further purification is carried out in a trichloroethylene distillation column, resulting in 99.99% pure trichloroethylene at the top of the column ; 6 The bottom stream of the tower passes through a tetrachloroethylene tower, from which tetrachloroethylene with a purity of 95% is obtained at the top, while waste residue is discharged from the bottom of the tower.
