It is used to discharge static electricity. In the field of fine chemicals, stainless steel connections generally do not require bonding wires; however, pipes with PTFE linings do require such wires, and there are regulations specifying how often samples should be taken to check the effectiveness of these bonding wires. This is done by companies or individuals with professional qualifications.

The \"GB 50235—97 Code for Construction and Acceptance of Industrial Metal Piping Projects\" stipulates: 6.12 Static grounding installation 6.12.1 For pipelines that require static grounding, conductivity must exist between various sections of the pipeline. When the resistance value between each pair of flanges or threaded joints exceeds 0.03Ω, a wire bridge should be installed. 6.12.2 When the earth resistance value of the piping system exceeds 100Ω, two grounding leads shall be provided. The grounding lead should be welded. 6.12.3 For titanium and stainless steel pipes that require electrostatic grounding, the wire bonds or grounding leads shall not be connected directly to the titanium and stainless steel pipes; instead, titanium plates or stainless steel plates must be used as intermediaries. 6.12.4 Materials or components used for static grounding shall not be painted before installation. The conductive contact surfaces must be rust-free and tightly connected. 6.12.5 After the static grounding installation is completed, it must be tested; if the resistance value exceeds the specified limit, inspections and adjustments should be carried out.

The main goal is to ensure that the flanges on both sides are in a conductive state (as many people have mentioned before, factors such as gaskets or linings can cause insulation between the two sides, but certain manufacturing processes require conductivity between them)

When the flow velocity of the medium inside the pipe reaches a certain level, friction with the pipe walls generates static electricity; since there is no place for this static electricity to be discharged when the pipes are connected via flanges, the risk level increases. Jumper wires are used to solve this problem. To avoid the potential risks posed by static electricity to the operation of equipment, especially in chemical industries where flammable and explosive materials are used

Let there be no misunderstanding: in petrochemical processes, flanges on metal pipes with 2 bolts require only that to meet the anti-static specifications, while flanges with 4 bolts need to be bonded together, as required by lightning protection standards.

Flanges connected by 4 bolts need to be bridged in order to prevent surge discharges from occurring instantaneously between the flanges due to lightning current.
