As the title suggests, for a reboiler, should the hot water enter from below and exit from above, or enter from above and exit from below? What are the benefits of doing this?

This device is heated by steam; heating with hot water works well as the water flows from top to bottom. The key is to prevent water hammer
Water enters from above and exits from below, but the outlet pipe must be pulled up to ensure full filling. Incidentally, steam is generally used for heating, with hot water being quite rare. If it is not pressurized hot water, the temperature is only 80-90 degrees, resulting in a limited range of applications.
For hot water, heat transfer oil, etc., it is best to have the flow from below to above, which ensures that the reboiler is fully filled~~~~

The hot water flow here is from top to bottom; presumably the temperature at the outlet is lower, so the density of the hot water is higher, giving it a somewhat siphonic quality.
The liquid flows from bottom to top, primarily to facilitate the removal of gases, allowing the liquid to fill the reboiler and maximize the efficiency of the heat exchange area.
The heating medium is hot water; it’s better for the water to flow in from above and out from below. After heating, the water temperature drops and its density increases, which facilitates hydraulic circulation. If it is steam heating, then it must have steam entering from above and exiting from below.
It should be from bottom in and top out, to ensure there is no air in the reboiler.
Allowing fluid to enter from above and exit from below can also fill the shell side. As mentioned earlier, the outlet pipe should be raised to a level slightly above the upper tube sheet, forming an inverted U-shape; a vent valve should be installed at the highest point of this inverted U-shape.
