The liquid level in the water seal tank determines the maximum pressure in the return tank; when this pressure is high, the excess pressure is discharged directly after washing with water from the water seal tank. I’m not sure which design institute is responsible for your process technology; the water seal tank serves to maintain the pressure in the atmospheric tower, and it also helps to recover some of the methanol. The drawback is that when the atmospheric pressure tower is under negative pressure, water can be drawn into the reflux tank, resulting in substandard products. It is recommended to add a check valve or nitrogen. Remember to reduce the pressure when adding nitrogen, and install a stand-alone control valve for that purpose.
A water seal is generally used to control pressure, maintain a low-pressure condition, and prevent gas leakage. As for the recovery of methanol, it is usually done using nitrogen from the atmospheric pressure reflux tank; since the pressure in the atmospheric pressure tower is low, it is also possible to use a water seal tank to control the pressure. However, it is necessary to ensure that the overflow port remains unobstructed, that there is enough water present, and to prevent the atmospheric pressure tower from becoming under pressure and thus drawing water into the atmospheric pressure reflux tank (this is theoretically possible). Additionally, it is important to prevent the atmospheric pressure tower from experiencing overpressure, which could cause liquid to spray out of the water seal tank
