When purchasing the pump, we explicitly specified that the pump shaft should be made of ASTM A182 GR F51; however, the manufacturer delivered it to us using material of type A276. Please help to verify this, thank you!

Generally, bars are produced either by hot rolling or cold drawing, and pores may form inside them. This is particularly dangerous when the bars are used under pressure. The main defect in such bars lies in their central area; a low-magnification analysis of a cross-section reveals loose structures and an abundance of impurities. Forgings possess excellent mechanical properties. In terms of the metal flow lines, those in forgings are relatively continuous, whereas the metal flow lines in bars are interrupted and lack continuity. forging can eliminate defects such as uneven microstructure in the material, resulting in a finer microstructure and better overall mechanical properties. Forgings are therefore used in important applications such as generator retaining rings, diesel engine shafts, and main shafts for nuclear power pumps. In summary, the advantages of the forging process include: 1) Heating before forging helps to eliminate residual stresses from the rolling process; 2) The axial properties of forgings are much better than their radial properties; 3) Forging breaks down large grains in the rolled material, resulting in uniform grain structure in the forging; 4) By selecting an appropriate forging ratio and creating suitable flow lines through forging, it is possible to improve the performance of the workpiece.
