Currently, the interest in coal-based ethylene glycol is on the rise, showing great momentum similar to that of acetic acid, methanol, and dimethyl ether in the past. Excessive promotion will only attract more funds into this emerging industry. From a technological development perspective, substantial investment is a good thing, but launching large-scale projects blindly can have catastrophic consequences for this emerging industry; **therefore, corresponding policies will be introduced to impose restrictions. At the end of May, I attended the ethylene glycol conference in Hangzhou and exchanged ideas with some representatives. The current mainstream technologies: the Institute of Physical Chemistry, East China University of Science and Technology, Tianjin University, and Ube are quite promising. Although Wu Zheng is also striving to prove itself, and General Manager Wang Baoming gave a brief speech at the meeting (the slides were blurred), this does not indicate their true technical capabilities, as there is no evidence that Wu Zheng is carrying out substantial research work, as do those institutions mentioned earlier. Personally, I agree quite a bit with Professor Ma from Tianjin University’s remarks at the meeting; when conducting research, one should be down-to-earth and not rush for quick results. Of course, there are some other research institutions that have not been listed. This is just a humble attempt to spark discussion; I hope to explore this topic together with friends from Haichuan!
The problem now is that the previous plant constructions were too advanced; plants were rushed into industrial scale before all the details had been fully understood in pilot tests, leaving us in a difficult situation.
Everyone is competing to get their hands on ethylene glycol produced from coal; there’s nothing we can do about it. State-owned enterprises face difficulties, and once they make profits from investments, private enterprises quickly follow suit. Teacher Ma really has deep expertise, haha
It’s really unknown, because no matter how well something is done in the laboratory, it cannot be tested in industrial production. If the experts who conduct the evaluations say that others are capable, then how good is one’s own performance?

Due to excessive investment, the operating rate of coal-based methanol production is severely insufficient; I hope that coal-based ethylene glycol production will not repeat the same mistakes as coal-based methanol production. It is necessary to exercise restraint, make rational investments, and avoid chasing trends just for the sake of it!
