Reply to 5# jensen_xu: The most direct cause of emulsification in straight-run diesel is an excessively high acid value of the diesel. Straight-run diesel contains naphthenic acids, and the heavier the diesel fraction, the heavier the naphthenic acid molecules. During alkaline refining of diesel, naphthenic acids react with alkalis to form sodium naphthenate. Light sodium naphthenate dissolves in water, while heavy sodium naphthenate does not; however, its sodium ion portion can dissolve in water, while the naphthenic acid portion remains in the oil. This gives heavy sodium naphthenate surfactant properties. As a result, alkaline refining of ordinary diesel is generally problem-free, but emulsification tends to occur during electrical refining of higher-quality diesel. There are currently anti-emulsifiers available that can effectively prevent emulsification during electrical refining of such diesel
