In our company, polytetrafluoroethylene is used in the cathode system, ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber is used in the anode system, and PVC has never been used
Polytetrafluoroethylene is the best material for these three types of gaskets; it has a wide range of applications, but its price is relatively high. EPDM can withstand temperatures of 120 degrees Celsius; it is a low-calcium, low-magnesium rubber, and is typically used in the cathode systems of ion exchange membrane devices. PVC gaskets are not resistant to high temperatures and are generally used in chlorine systems.
Theoretically, polytetrafluoroethylene and EPDM can be used with chlorine, brine, and caustic soda without any problems. It’s just that EPDM is softer and prone to aging; therefore, if it needs to be disassembled for maintenance over time, it’s best to replace the gaskets as well. From my experience, in caustic soda plants (excluding the liquid chlorine section), PTFE gaskets are generally the best choice for metal pipes. For some plastic pipes such as C-PVC and FRP pipes, EPDM is the best choice as it reduces the risk of leaks. But be careful with the force when tightening; don’t use too much pressure, or the gasket will deform. PVC gaskets are not resistant to high temperatures and are generally used in chlorine systems.
