I’ve heard that many large air compressors are equipped with steam drives; Since I have no experience with motorized boats, I have a few questions I don’t understand; I hope fellow sailors can help me out. I. What size air compressor should be paired with a steam turbine? II. What is the purpose of a steam distribution machine? III. What is the stability of the steam turbine? (Some say that steam turbines have poor stability and are relatively difficult to start.) IV. What are the advantages and disadvantages of steam-driven systems compared to electric-driven systems?
The method used for driving air compressors is usually determined by the manufacturers themselves based on the specific conditions of their own companies, rather than being set by the air compressor manufacturers.
Compared to electric drive, pneumatic drive eliminates one step of primary energy conversion; it enables automatic load adjustment, has high power, and high rotational speed; However, air-driven systems require significant investment, offer high precision, cannot be started instantly (as warming up the system is necessary), and need superheated steam at medium pressure or higher as a power source; in addition, overall thermal balance must also be taken into account ; Choose between air suspension or electric suspension based on your actual circumstances

For air compressors, any type of drive will do as long as the power requirement is met. When using a motor for high-power applications, it is necessary to consider whether the starting current can be handled, as the current during startup is several times higher than that during normal operation.
The fundamental reason is that it is more cost-effective to use a turbine for propulsion; saving money is the key factor
It’s probably to check if there is excess steam available in the unit
Reply to 1#: The advantage is that steam turbine motors have high efficiency; I think they are quite stable once properly operated, though the investment in steam turbines is relatively high! Here, most of them are towed by trucks
Whether to use a steam turbine or an electric motor to drive the air compressor depends mainly on the actual conditions of the enterprise. For example, if an enterprise does not have a boiler system or a source of high-pressure steam, it has to use an electric motor for driving. On the other hand, if the enterprise has access to high-pressure steam, it usually opts for a steam turbine for driving, as this reduces the need for energy conversion and thus saves considerable amounts of energy. Therefore, using a steam turbine for driving is an effective way to save energy, reduce consumption, and improve economic efficiency.
Turbines help to reduce energy consumption significantly! Turbine-driven units operate more smoothly! :handshake
