I graduated in 2010, majoring in Process Equipment and Control Engineering. I went to a chemical plant and now work as an operator, on shift. The company treats us all as operators; those with a master’s degree have been working on shifts for 5 years already, and even more so those with a bachelor’s degree. So I don’t plan to stay here any longer. But right now I feel like I haven’t learned anything; I only know a little about chemical processes and procedures. I was wondering if any of the more experienced colleagues have any suggestions! Thank you!
With the owner’s level of expertise, educational background, and the fact that they still work shifts as a graduate student, it’s clear that the company they work for is not an ordinary large enterprise; it must be a large, modern state-owned enterprise. Such state-owned enterprises use advanced and top-tier control technologies, which are even far more sophisticated than the knowledge learned in the school where the original poster studied. However, to my surprise, the original poster claimed to have learned nothing. On the production floor, one is exposed to the most practical things – tangible equipment that can be seen and touched. If nothing can be learned under such conditions, I can’t see where else one could acquire such knowledge and skills. Process control is based on process equipment, and it relies on process control to carry out the processes. If one is not familiar with the process and does not know the parameters that need to be controlled within it, then such a control system is nothing but a fantasy with no practical value. In my opinion, a college graduate who has been working for a year yet still hasn’t learned anything is someone who isn’t good at learning, or who doesn’t know how to learn; such a person has no value in terms of development, and can hardly even be considered a qualified operator. Just imagine, if a young person can’t even do a routine job well, how can we expect him to contribute technically or manage a company? I often say that if you can’t be a good operator, you can’t become an engineer. I hope the original poster will think carefully about what I said, give it some thought, and think again.

Currently, like you, I work at a chemical plant as an operator, and I have been in this role for 2 years now. As for learning something, I don’t think I’ve learned much over these two years; perhaps the most I’ve learned is to accept reality, let go of my pride, and calm down.

Same major, graduated in 2009! I worked in shifts at the caustic soda plant for three months, and after working in the Equipment Management Department for 1.5 years, I quit because it was boring! After that, I worked in the heavy-duty container manufacturing workshop of a chemical equipment factory for 3 months; now I am working on pressure vessel design! That’s all!
Reply to 4# YUFANDU: Haha, working shifts is a way to temper one’s patience. Many people leave here every year; we’re always short of staff!
