Our factory has a 50m³ horizontal liquid ammonia tank used in the ammonia decomposition process for hydrogen production. However, the readings from the level gauge are always inaccurate, which puts us at a disadvantage in terms of daily management and cost control. We are currently using magnetic flap level gauges. May I ask what kind of level gauges your units use, and how accurate do you find them to be in practice? Please also give some recommendations

For a 50m³ liquid ammonia tank, magnetic flap gauges are relatively accurate. Radar level gauges, ultrasonic level gauges, as well as photoelectric level gauges used in large tanks do not perform very well; their accuracy drops even more when the liquid level is below 1200 mm. Flap level gauges installed on-site are still the better choice – as long as they are not damaged intentionally, they should function adequately. It’s sufficient to specify the values for each scale mark

Reply to 4# fetn: One should also consider the quality of the product. If the tank is not large and there is no oil present, using a glass plate is a good option – it works well. For larger tanks, white steel magnetic flap valves are a good choice; however, sometimes it’s necessary to use a magnet to activate them. Capacitive and radiant types are rarely used in tank containers, and I haven’t seen any other advanced types either.
Check to make sure that the float type is correct; verify that its density and viscosity are appropriate. Also, inspect the inner wall of the level gauge for any impurities such as oil, and remove it to clean it with steam. If nothing is wrong, then it’s likely a human error

Reply to 4# fetn: May I ask the original poster why your level gauge is inaccurate? Is it the display that’s incorrect? Are the marked scales still inaccurate? For liquid ammonia storage tanks of your size, a glass plate level gauge is sufficient.
A glass plate will do; as long as the markings are accurate, it’s both practical and convenient.
It shows inaccurate readings; sometimes, even after 12 hours of production, the liquid level remains practically unchanged
Glass panels are unsafe; if they break, it will result in a liquid ammonia leak
