MES stands for Manufacturing Execution Management System; it serves as the link for information integration within a company’s CIMS framework, and it is the fundamental technical tool for implementing an enterprise’s agile manufacturing strategy as well as for making production processes in workshops more agile. Looking at the current status of the application of information systems in China’s manufacturing sector, the focus of development is generally placed on two areas: ERP management systems and shop floor control systems (SFC). However, as product marketing has rapidly evolved over the past decade or so from a production-oriented approach to a market- and competition-oriented one, it has also posed challenges to the management and organization of manufacturing plants; relying solely on ERP and automation systems often proves insufficient to cope with this new situation. The factory Manufacturing Execution System (MES) is precisely what can fill this gap. The factory Manufacturing Execution System, or MES, is a production management technology and real-time information system aimed at the workshop level that has seen rapid development internationally over the past 10 years. MES can provide users with a fast-response, flexible, and highly refined manufacturing environment, helping enterprises reduce costs, deliver goods on schedule, improve product quality, and enhance service quality. Applicable to various industries (home appliances, automotive, semiconductors, communications, IT, pharmaceuticals), it provides effective enterprise information management for both those that engage in large-scale mass production and those that operate in a mixed model of small-batch production of multiple products alongside large-scale production. MES is positioned in the execution layer between the planning layer and the on-site automation systems, and is primarily responsible for workshop production management and scheduling. A well-designed MES system can integrate management functions such as production scheduling, product tracking, quality control, equipment failure analysis, and network reporting on a unified platform. By utilizing a single database and network connections, it can provide workshop management information services to departments such as production, quality inspection, process engineering, and logistics simultaneously. By emphasizing the overall optimization of the manufacturing process, the system helps enterprises implement a complete closed-loop production system, and assists them in establishing an integrated and real-time ERP/MES/SFC information system.

ERP is aimed at the informatization of enterprise management. Integrated control (also known as EMS) is the intermediate layer that handles the relationship between ERP and the field control layer. Integrated management and control is based on the production process control system; by processing, analyzing, optimizing, integrating, storing, and distributing information related to enterprise production management and process control, it utilizes modern enterprise production management models to create a comprehensive system that covers both enterprise production management and basic automation. Simply put, MES provides ERP with actual production data, such as costs, cycle times, output, and other production-related information.
