I have a gentle question: when the self-priming pump is in standby mode, with the inlet and outlet valves open, won’t the material flow away from the side of the self-priming pump?
Take a look at the pump outlet – is there something called a check valve there?
Pumps like this definitely need to be equipped with check valves to prevent the problems you mentioned from occurring.
Forward flow is not possible, as the pressure in the pipeline on the side of the self-priming pump is lower than that in the outlet pipeline, which results only in reverse flow. Reverse flow is also impossible due to the presence of a check valve at the pump outlet; therefore, the material in the pipeline on the side of the self-priming pump remains essentially stationary.
The pump outlets are equipped with check valves, which allow the fluid to flow out of the outlet but prevent it from flowing in, so it’s not a problem. It’s not a problem if the check valve does not close tightly; only a small amount of leakage returns to the operating pump, causing an increase in the pump’s current and load. A slight drop in pressure does not pose a serious issue, but it can be dangerous for large-scale units. Generally, backup pumps are installed to start automatically, and volumetric lubrication pumps in large-scale units should have their inlets and outlets kept open at all times.
