It should be a piston compressor, or a diaphragm compressor. I’ve heard of centrifugal air valves for the first time
There’s no issue with over-temperature in centrifugal types either; it must be a reciprocating type. What medium is being pumped? (N2 is prone to overheating) Is there enough cooling water? How is the compression ratio control?
Your description is quite vague; I can only offer my opinion. It’s likely that there’s a problem with the inter-stage cooler – perhaps it’s scaled up, or there’s an insufficient amount of water in the circulation system, or the flow of water has been interrupted.
It shouldn’t be a centrifugal compressor; the compression ratio of its first stage is very low, so overheating should not occur. Reciprocating machines can indeed experience high temperatures at the outlet; if there is nothing wrong with the machinery, a simple solution is to slightly open the valve that connects the primary outlet to the primary inlet. (Treats the symptoms, not the root cause)

If the temperature at the first-stage outlet of a reciprocating compressor is high, there is only one possibility. In other words, the primary outlet or secondary inlet valve is not tight, causing the gas entering the secondary stage to flow back to the primary stage. Check the air valve.
It is reciprocating; has the secondary intake valve been replaced, or is there an over-temperature issue with the primary exhaust?
